What Are the Most Common Face Shapes?

There are many different face shapes, each one is unique in its own way. It’s important to understand and identify your own face shape before trying to style your jewellery around it. We are going to walk you through the most common face shapes!

Oval

People with oval face shapes normally have balanced proportions (eyes, nose and mouth) with a slightly wider forehead and cheekbones. The bottom of their faces get more narrow down to the chin area. The oval face shape is typically longer than it is wider, this is what gives it the ‘oval’ look.

Round

Round face shapes are usually soft with curved lines. The cheeks are normally the widest part of the face. Their jawlines are rounded and soft, the forehead is a similar width to the jaw. People with round face shapes look full and soft due to the circular face with some slight angles.

Square

A square face shape typically has a stronger look to it, with an angular jawline. The sides of the face are straight which creates a sharp angle to the jaw, making it a key characteristic to square face shapes. The forehead is usually the same width as the jaw too. All these features mean that this face shape is very defined.

Heart

The heart face shape gets its name due to the top of the face being wider than the lower half, this creates a heart shape. They usually have a broad forehead with high cheekbones, making the higher part of the face stand out more than any other part of the face.

Diamond

People with diamond face shapes have very prominent cheekbones with a narrow forehead and chin. Their face shape tapers towards the jaw, this gives the face a pointed appearance. This face shape is similar to the heart face shape, but diamond face shapes have more angular lines and a narrower chin.

Although we have named multiple different face shapes there are many more shapes. Everyone is unique and may not fit into a certain group perfectly, so it is important to research and understand your own face.

How to Determine Your Face Shape

journey much simpler, meaning you can find more things that suit your face shape. We are going to go through a few steps that can help you…

Firstly, we recommend that you get your hair out of your face. This will make figuring out your face shape easier as your hair will not be covering any of it. Simply tie your hair back or use a headband. Then all you need is a mirror and some good lighting for the next steps!

A good starting place is to measure the key areas of your face. For example, forehead, cheekbone and jawline width would be the best place to start. Measure these parts with a flexible tape measure. Doing this will make figuring out your face shape much simpler and easier.

Once you have these measurements, compare them to each to see which characteristics are more prominent on your face. You can also just look at the general shape of your face. You can then compare your own face and measurements to common face shapes online.

When you have determined your face shape, you can use this information to figure out what jewellery suits you best! It is an important and easy step to allow you to find your style.

The Best Earrings for Each Face Shape

Best earrings for oval faces

If you have an oval face shape, you can pull off almost any earring shape! The world is your oyster when it comes to elevating your looks. The key is to emphasis on your natural symmetry while adding a little bit of sparkle…Here are a few earring types we recommend if you have an oval face shape.

Stud earrings

Studs are a classic and simple earring, they're great for day to day wear. They will highlight the balanced features of an oval face. You could opt for studs with a unique shape of colour to elevate the classic earring style.

Hoop earrings

Hoop earrings are a lovely option for oval face shapes, as they add width to the face and contrast the natural length of the face. We would recommend a medium to large sized hoop, however don't go too big as it could overwhelm your face shape.

Drop earrings

Drop Earrings are a great way to add length and movement to any look. These earrings would help compliment the natural balance of the oval face shape. Depending on what style you choose, they can be subtle or more dramatic.

Earrings for Round Faces

If you have a round face the trick is to wear jewellery that adds length to your face, to help create an illusion and help balance out the fuller areas of the face. There are a few earring types we recommend for you!

Long drop earrings

Drop earrings that are long can help create a look of a longer face, it can make the face look less round. They are always the main attraction, they draw attention from the rounder cheeks on a round face. We recommend a sleek or teardrop design, this will allow the earring to shine but not overpower your features.

Hoop earrings

Hoop earrings are perfect to flatter a round face. You should opt for oval hoops, as this style will add length to your face. Medium or larger hoop earrings are a great way to accessories without making the face appear too round.

Chandelier earrings

Chandelier earrings are similar to Drop Earrings, they add length and movement. This helps elongate the appearance of the face. Choose chandelier earrings that have angular designs over round or circular ones, the angular styles will create a more structured look.

Earrings for Square Faces

For square faces the key is to try to soften the sharp edges of the face, this creates more of a balanced look with the help of some jewellery! We want to add some curves and elongation, here are some earrings that can do that…

Teardrop earrings

Teardrop earrings naturally elongate the face and soften the angels of the square jaw. The shape of these earrings follow the natural curves of the face, this helps create a softer and more feminine look. You should try and wear teardrop earrings that have some movement to help add some more interest to the look.

Round earrings

Round earrings contrast with the strong, angular features of the square face. The round earrings help soften the sharp features: cheekbones and jawline. The gentle curves against the sharp edges smooth each other out. Some earrings that would create this effect are medium/large studs or delicate hoops.

Earrings for Triangle-Shaped Faces

Triangle-shaped faces are narrower at the bottom of the face, the goal with earrings is to balance the wider jawline and narrower forehead out. Wearing earrings that add width to the face help create a softer appearance. Here are some examples of earrings to wear if you have a triangle-shaped face!

Chandelier earrings

Chandelier Earrings are a perfect way to balance out the triangle face shape. They draw attention to the top of the face and add width. The best chandelier earrings are the ones with curves, they create a balanced and elegant look.

Drop earrings

Drop earrings have a similar effect as Chandelier Earrings, they allow more width to be added to the face. They are a statement look, which will draw more attention to the cheekbones. Again it is best to choose drop earrings that are delicate and elegant with a soft curve to soften the angular jaw.

Earrings for Heart-Shaped Faces

If you have a heart shaped face, we want to try and achieve a look to balance out the forehead and cheekbones. We are looking to style earrings that add width around the jawline, this helps soften the sharpness of the chin. Here are the best earring styles for heart shaped faces.

Stud earrings

Stud earrings are simple, classic and can keep the attention on your eyes and cheekbones! They don’t draw too much attention to the chin, this allows the symmetry of your face to be the main attraction. We would suggest opting for round or square shaped studs, these can be sparkly to add more elegance and draw more attention to the upper part of the face.

Hoop earrings

Hoop earrings are excellent for heart-shaped faces, they can help create a more oval shape. They do this by balancing out the wider forehead with their fullness. Medium and large Hoop Earrings will do this better by adding the fullness to the lower part of the face, this softens the chin. It also creates an overall more balanced look. We do recommend that you avoid small hoops, as they probably won't contrast the angular chin.
